Measuring your Carbon Footprint and Reporting
The first step requires data. The more data you provide the better. However, our model has been designed by experienced environmental management consultants who have enjoyed many years of overcoming the challenges of incomplete data sets, so although pristine data sets are most welcome, we have adapted to cope with less than perfect data.
The basic data requirements are energy use plus, in order to calculate an intensity ratio, the total meter square coverage of buildings, number of full-time employees and/or turnover. This can be entered for a time period of your choice either as a total for the company or, if you have more than one site, as a total per site. The same is true of all other data such as water usage, waste tonnage, business and freight travel, paper usage, IT procurement, and catering costs.
The list of required data is long but the more comprehensive data you collect, the more far-reaching and powerful will be your carbon reductions over time. Our tool combines simplicity with an exhaustive reporting structure enabling a comprehensive, accurate carbon footprint, which is your starting point. The more information you provide, the more detailed your report will be and, most important, the more accurate your carbon footprint.
We will send you a form (Excel format) to complete and ask you to return this along with scanned copies of a few documents for verification.
The next step is over to us, we will create your carbon footprint. Our calculation tools apply all the necessary national and/or international standards and data sources which are contributing to a shared global approach to measuring and reducing carbon emissions. Further, our methodology is fully compliant with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard, which is being universally applied and this ensures that the information in your report can be confidently used in communications to employees, customers and shareholders.

The third step is benchmarking. To enable a standardised approach to carbon emissions reductions, a sophisticated database has been developed over time that calculates the emissions of typical business activities and analyses them into the appropriate categories. (You will become very familiar with the terms Scopes 1, 2 and 3*!) All this data is anonymised and enables us to compare your emissions with other businesses of your size and sector and advise you on the most effective and relevant emissions reductions strategies.
Step four is delivery. We will send you a copy of your Carbon Footprint, talk you through it (and present it to you/your team, if you have signed up to be a Footprinter or Zeroplanner), and then suggest ways to reduce your footprint.
